Alejandro Palomo, one of the Mermaid Fellows, has, together with researchers from DTU, discovered that a bacterium is capable to single-handedly transform ammonia to nitrate, a process that, for the last century, was thought to require two specialized groups of microorganisms. This discovery could impact water treatment technology and help bringing the global nitrogen cycle back into balance. The study was published in the prestigious scientific journal ISME Journal.
